John Irving said, in The Cider House Rules, that a man's greatest desire is simply
to make himself useful. I try to keep that in mind when I make the kids listen to my long blathering, or when I assign
a project. It should be useful, and the usefulness should be apparent. I try to keep my assignments as authentic
(or authentic feeling) as possible. I find curiosity, accented with discipline, most useful.
